It's the biggest job search since David Moyes was recruited by Alex Ferguson (and we all know how well that turned out...) But while the ill-fated ex-Manchester United manager is unlikely to find his next gig on Newsnight, there are plenty of fearsome interviewers chomping at the bit to step into Paxman's shoes.
So, who should it be? Existing presenters Kirsty Wark, Emily Maitlis and Laura Kuenssberg are all in the frame to be bumped up to the show's top job and Piers Morgan has already thrown his name into the hat - via Twitter, of course.
Could another woman join the show, completing an all-female line-up - Cathy Newman, Stephanie Flanders or Mishal Husain, perhaps? Or will Susanna Reid attempt to reverse her fortunes and skulk back to the Beeb, tail between her legs?
Then there's always the unlikely prospect that one of Paxman's infamous interviewees could step into the fold - Michael Howard or Russell Brand, anyone? Maybe not.
While editor Ian Katz sifts through those CVs, we want to know what YOU think - have your say in our poll or, if your favourite's missing, let us know in the comments box below.
