It’s back! Mad Men’s Final Season is starting tonight on Sky Atlantic at 10pm. A show renowned for it’s fashion and 60’s styling is attempting to break into the 70’s, a period we know for being ‘the era that fashion forgot’. Judging by the first sneaky peeks it looks like the ladies are working the new fashion trends and giving the 70’s another chance. Move over 90’s grunge, I think the 70’s will be a much hotter look for you this Spring Summer!
This look of Megan’s makes me think of holidays, sunshine and Pina Coladas by the pool. Pinks and corals are warm and fun and her accessories match perfectly. Megan has always had a more risqué style than Don’s ex wife, Betty. The two women’s looks in these shots show just how different their styles are.
I have taken a more modern twist on Megan’s dress with more graphic patterns and even bolder colours. Both dresses are short and sexy and can be styled up or down. My favourite is the Lipsy Waterfall Tee Dress – the graphic print is fun and modern; styled with simple nude accessories you can let the dress do all the work. With so much leg showing, you have a choice to either sex up the look with a gorgeous pair of nude sling-backs or, if you’re feeling bold, how about these brilliant slip on shoes by H & M for their new Conscious line, a touch of masculine chic and they just look so comfy!
A very demure look from Betty, the dress is a bit shapeless and not short enough to compensate to give her shape. To replicate this look yourself, a bit of clinching in at the waist and some heels could make it a whole lot better!
Both these dresses are more fitted than Betty’s original. Rather than change the length, I think the look will work better by accentuating an hourglass silhouette. Depending on your personal style you can go either way with the shoes. The pair from Dunnes Stores are a classic court style, perfect for keeping this look classic and great for the office. However, if you want to give it a bit more sex appeal, the Leather Sandals from H & M are my favourite. The chunky appearance will give the look the bit of edge that it needs and the heel height will change the way you hold your body, accentuating your curves.
Oh how I wish I had a body like Christina Hendricks, she is sheer perfection as Joan and has epitomised the femme fatal look throughout the seasons. It looks like season seven will be no exception. This look is very girly with hot pink and pearl accessories, but here it is made to look classic and sexy.
Showing off those curves is the most important aspect of this look, both these body-con dresses will help with that. The Peplum dress will be great for you lucky curvy girls, enhancing your waist and with a little coverage for the tummy. The body-con dress on the right will be really great for a more straight up and down figure. It’s skintight, hugging to your slender shape, and the way that the sleeves will sit a little off the shoulder adds sex appeal. To accessorise, nudes and baby pinks will work best. My favourite piece is the Pearl Charm Bracelet by Zara Taylor London. What a steal at £13, and just perfect to finish off this look.
This look from Peggy is cute and young and perfect for spring. I really love the colour combinations here, making a change from the very warm tones seen from the other women so far. This look will be great in the transitional weather as layering is the key here. Perfect for those days where you wrap up in your winter coat, whilst waiting for your train in the early hours, but then melt on the train on the way home when the spring sun shows its face.
H & M have so many lovely pieces coming up so you will have to keep your eyes peeled for some of these in the next few weeks. The blue skirt and white shirt create a great base and from there you can make the look suit your style and needs. The green vest top will make this look smarter and more work appropriate, I also love the gold detailing on it, which will be picked out by elements of the accessories. However, the daisy bustier-style top is fun and really summery, perfect for a day at the park. Monk shoes have been a firm favourite of mine through autumn winter and I think you can bring them through into spring here, keeping the look weather ready. I don’t know about you, but I’m not quite ready to bring out my open-toe sandals just yet.
And for a change… Roger
I couldn’t help myself when I saw this look from Roger Sterling, I am not a male fashion expert but I am a firm advocate for androgynous dressing myself and I am rarely seen out of some kind of trouser-and-shirt combination at work. So I have created a look book for women based on Roger’s look here. After all the dresses and hot pinks from the ladies, here is a much more cool palate and crisp clean lines from tailored items. Go on, give it a go!
Cropped, patterned trousers are an obsession of mine. Both of these styles give something a little different and work for varying budgets. Beware ladies who are blessed with a larger chest, the double-breasted blazer is not for you; instead work this look with a tuxedo blazer with a single button. Oh, and you must check out this Elle Laptop bag from Isla Rule London. If you’re feeling like you might need a pop of colour here, just look at the bag’s lining and it will bring a smile to your face. Gorgeous!
