The first episode of the TV remake of Fargo aired in the States last night. No one was more excited than Bridget McMahon...

And while the path from film to television is famously treacherous, the FX revamp of the classic Coen Brothers film starring Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton went down a storm as scores of viewers took to Twitter to sing its praises:

A glance at Twitter overnight would have left the Sherlock star blushing as his many fans rejoiced in his latest television role...

Freeman's Lester Nygaard sees him adopt a Minnesotan accent – an intonation perfected by the film's original Lester, William H Macy – but the Twitterverse just couldn't make up their minds on his American twang:

But accent aside, the internet was unanimously in favour of his shirtless scenes...

Although, it wasn't just Freeman who captured the attention of the fans. His co-star Billy Bob Thornton's Lorne Malvo was also applauded on Twitter last night with users delighting in his return to their screens...

And perhaps most exciting of all were the comparisons already being drawn with Breaking Bad – hailed by many as one of the greatest television shows of all time...

For any UK fans desperate to see what all the fuss is about, you've not got long to wait – Fargo premieres on Channel 4 this Sunday at 9pm.
