The first trailer for David Fincher's Gone Girl has finally been released. And it's pretty creepy.

Both Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike star (as Nick and Amy Dunne) though you barely get a good look at either of them.

The trailer, which follows the build up of media attention after Amy goes missing as a strange cover of Elvis Costello's She by Richard Butler plays over the top, is shadowy and shot with a dim lighting which lends the film a nordic noir feel.

So much so that you're a little unsure as to what you've actually seen...

If you've read the book, you might be feeling rather confident that you know what you're looking at. But don't forget, Gillian Flynn, the novel's author, has rewritten the ending. So there are no certainties here.

Nick might be protesting his innocence, but is he? What could that creepy smile mean? Might the end of the trailer, which sees Amy's lifeless body underwater, hint to Amy's demise?

Gillian Flynn's novel Gone Girl follows Nick Dunne, a bar owner who comes under suspicion when his wife disappears from their home on the day of their fifth wedding anniversary.

The film, which also stars Neil Patrick Harris, Missi Pyle and Tyler Perry, could be poised to jump from being an international best seller to an international blockbuster when it hits cinemas later this year.

Gone Girl will be in UK cinemas 3 October.
