Simon Cowell: Being a dad won’t stop me being Mr Nasty

The Britain’s Got Talent judge says his talent radar hasn’t changed just because he’s had a baby

Britain’s Got Talent judges Simon Cowell and Alesha Dixon are both new parents – but that's not going to affect their hunt for talent on this year's series.

“If someone’s useless, you’re not suddenly going to go, ‘You’re fantastic’ because I’ve had a baby,” jokes Simon, whose son Eric was born in February.

But he admits his other babies have helped him learn to be a bit kinder to the younger acts: “My dogs kind of got me warmed up for that, Squiddly and Diddly, you know. I learned compassion from them.

“But I’ve always liked kids, we’ve always been kind to kids on the show.”

How about Alesha, is she going to be a soft touch now she’s a mum? “No.”

Not that the juges have a problem with her children being associated with Britain's Got Talent. This year's advertising campaign starred Alesha’s daughter Azura Sienna and Amanda Holden’s daughter Hollie, with David Walliams shown dressed as a nurse tending to an unseen baby Eric.

BGT is the ‘mummy and daddy’ of all talent shows it says, with the recent addition to the Guinness Book of World Records as the most successful reality show format sealing the deal.

Of course, Simon doesn’t really think he’s new to this parenting lark anyway.

“I had a baby before I had a baby, with David” – who during auditions this year threw a pen at Simon and nearly blinded him because he was being funnier.

Oh yes, BGT and the chaos of the variety show are back this Saturday night at 7:15pm on ITV
