X-Men: Days of Future Past is set to hit screens on May 23 but the franchise's producers are already looking beyond it...
According to producer Lauren Shuler Donner, the future lies in spin-offs. While Marvel Studios have peddled plenty of standalone movies starring Captain America, Thor and Iron Man, Fox, who make the X-Men movies, have so far limited theirs to the Wolverine films, starring Hugh Jackman.
"There was a regime [at the studio] that didn't see the worth in [spin-offs], and the current people who run Fox understand, embrace it, and we're going to do right by it," explains Donner who has produced all the X-Men films. "I'd like to do Gambit. I'd like to do Deadpool. We'll see. There's a lot of really great characters."
But also on Donner's radar is Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique who plays a key role in Days of Future Past's plot. And according to X-Men writer and producer Simon Kinberg, it's Mystique who presents exciting opportunities for a standalone feature.
"I love what Jen Lawrence has done with her," he said, "and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, there's so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo."
Keep your eyes peeled, folks. And in the meantime there's plenty of big-screen Marvel comics action to get excited about in the coming years, with a further mutant film, X-Men: Apocalypse due for release on 27 May 2016 and another Wolverine flick scheduled for 3 March 2017.
