London theatre-goers were in for a treat last night when Hollywood movie star Andrew Garfield made a surprise cameo in a Punchdrunk event at the fictional Temple Studios.
The Amazing Spider-Man actor appeared unannounced in full costume, chewing a piece of straw, as he played his part in the company’s current production of The Drowned Man which sees the cast interact with audience members.
The event is staged in a four-storey office building near Paddington station, refitted to resemble a 1960s Hollywood film studio. The main cast of 40 roam the floors with the leads playing out a tragic love story while the supporting cast – of which Garfield was a part for one night only – add distractions and intrigue for the 600-strong audience.
Garfield is in London as part of a global tour promoting the Spider-Man sequel in which he stars opposite on-and-off-screen girlfriend Emma Stone. Born in Los Angeles, the 30-year-old actor was raised in Surrey and received critical acclaim and a Tony nomination for his portrayal of Biff Loman in a Broadway production of Death of a Salesman back in 2012.
But he isn’t the only famous face to appear in a Punchdrunk event. Florence Welch also made an unannounced cameo in The Drowned Man at the end of March, posting a photo of her character on her Instagram account:
