As trailers go, the latest taster for Marvel’s upcoming mega-mutant smackdown (opening in the UK on Thursday 22 May) is really one to whet the appetite. Original X-Men director Bryan Singer here rounds up mutants old and new, in an apocalyptic free-for-all that sees Hugh Jackman’s world-weary Wolverine sent on a back-to-the-future mission to save mutantkind from itself.

The sight of past and present incarnations of Professor X (Patrick Stewart/James McAvoy) and Magneto (Ian McKellen/Michael Fassbender) in the same film, along with revealing scenes of Hunger Games heroine Jennifer Lawrence as blue-skinned shape-changer Mystique, will have fans of the franchise all a-quiver. Sure it’s doomy, but the return of Singer to the fray and virtually the entire X-cast (plus Game of Thrones’s Peter Dinklage as the scientist creator of the mutant-killing Sentinels) guarantees as much action at the box office as there is on the screen.
