Forget schedules and remote controls. Ad breaks? What ad breaks? Sometimes the best new TV and film can be found online and watched whenever you fancy...

From BBC hits Sherlock, Call the Midwife and Doctor Who to US imports Homeland and American Horror Story, via an Amazon original series and the Veronica Mars film which made Kickstarter history, this is a good week to delve into Video On Demand.

Sherlock - season 1 and 2 available now on Netflix.

It's elementary, Netflix is now the place to go to get your Sherlock-fix. The first two series of the hit BBC1 detective drama starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman is now available to watch again... and again... and again.

Season 1 - 3 available on blinkbox, Amazon Prime Instant Video and iTunes.

Call the Midwife - season 1 and 2 available now on Netflix.

If you're not familiar with Chummy, Trixie, Jenny and co you really are missing out. BBC1's period drama, set in the poverty stricken East End of London during the late 1950s, follows a gang of midwives as they welcome new life into the world. Starring Miranda Hart, Jessica Raine, Pam Ferris, Jenny Agutter and Helen George, the show has charmed viewers the world over and is set to return for a fourth run next year.

Season 1 - 3 is now available on blinkbox and iTunes.

Doctor Who - season 1 - 6 available now on Netflix.

If the recent 50th anniversary of Doctor Who whetted your appetite for more adventures on the Tardis, Netflix are here to help. The 6th series of the BBC1 sci-fi series, starring Matt Smith, Karen Gillian and Arthur Darvill, is joining series 1 to 5 on the streaming service. Now that's a whole lotta Who...

Betas - available now on Amazon Prime Instant Video

Betas, an 11-episode season following four wannabe entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley, is the first original series to drop on Amazon Prime Instant Video since it became Amazon Prime Instant Video.

One of the series commissioned off the back of Amazon's pilot release in April last year, the comedy stars Ed Begley Fr, Joe Dinicol, Karan Soni, Jon Daly and Charlie Saxton as their characters develop a new dating and social app called BRB.

Homeland - season 1 and 2 available now on Netflix.

Haven't watched Homeland yet? Seriously. Where have you been? Thankfully you can now catch up on the first two seasons of US thriller on Netflix.

The gripping, heart-pumping, edge-of-your-seat drama follows CIA agent Carrie Mathison. When prisoner of war Marine Nicholas Brody lands back on US soil after years in captivity, she suspects him of being turned into an Al Queda terrorist - and as his family react to his return after years assumed dead, sparks begin to fly between the pair.

Season 1 - 3 available on blinkbox, iTunes and Amazon Prime Instant Video.

American Horror Story - season 1 and 2 available now on Netflix

American Horror Story might be from the maker of Glee and star Nashville's Connie Briton, but don't go thinking that means it'll be a light hearted, diamante covered, musical number, too. In fact, you'll need nerves of steel to watch the creepy, jumpy and often downright disturbing drama. If you think you've got what it takes, two series American Horror Story and American Horror Story: Asylum are now available on Netlflix.

Season 1 - 3 is also available on iTunes, Amazon Prime Instant Video and blinkbox.

Veronica Mars - available now on blinkbox and iTunes

Years of petitioning and an incredibly successful Kickstarter campaign later, Veronica Mars is back, after her TV series was cancelled mid series back in 2007. The film, which reunites familiar faces from the TV series with a string of fan-pleasing cameos, sees everyone's favourite teenage private detective all grown up. But while V Mars might be 10 years older, living in NYC with a perfect man and a promising law career, that doesn't mean she can resist the pull of her hometown Neptune and her former flame Logan Echolls...

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - available from today on blinkbox

Watch the second instalment of the Hunger Games franchise, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson, on blinkbox. Catching Fire picks up where the first film left off, with Katiss and Peeta, now free of the Hunger Games, embarking on their victory tour. The tour doesn't go to plan though, and before you can say 'May the odds be ever in your favour' the pair are heading back into the arena...
