We have a lot to thank Steve Thompson for. He's the man who brought us such Sherlock treats as The Sign of Three, The Blind Banker and series two's jaw-dropping cliffhanger, The Reichenbach Fall. Now he's reprising his role as a Doctor Who scribe, penning an episode for the upcoming eighth series - the first time he's written for new Doctor, Peter Capaldi.

Thompson is no stranger to the BBC's long-running sci-fi drama, writing The Curse of the Black Spot back in 2011 as well as last year's Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS which featured Top Boy actor Ashley Walters. Now, he will put pen to paper for the fifth episode of the next Doctor Who run which is due to return to BBC1 in late 2014.

Fresh from his acclaimed work on the second series of Line of Duty, Douglas MacKinnon is returning to direct a batch of the new Doctor Who episodes, with showrunner Steven Moffat also confirmed to pen the series opener as well as episode four. Phil Ford (The Sarah Jane Adventures, Wizards vs Aliens) has been tapped to write the second episode with the writer of the third yet to be confirmed.

Take a look at some of Steve Thompson's work from series seven episode Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS...
