From Call the Midwife to Line of Duty - Jessica Raine's TV CV

You probably recognise Jessica Raine as prim and proper Jenny Lee from BBC1's hit period drama Call the Midwife. The British born actress, with her jolly red cardigan and bicycle bell, is something of a Sunday night staple...

But she's done more than ride around on the cobbled streets of Poplar. Raine has starred in sci-fi success Doctor Who, 60s-set drama An Adventure in Space and Time AND played a stabbed socialite in Garrow's Law.

Raine's star is on the rise, though, and she's branching out from the cosy walls of Nonnatus House. As well as recently being cast in Sky Atlantic's Arctic-set crime drama Fortitude, Raine is set to star in gritty BBC2 cop series Line of Duty, which returns for its second series tonight...

Line of Duty

Jessica Raine joins Vicky McClure, Keeley Hawes and Martin Compston as Detective Constable Georgia Trotman, AC-12's newest recruit. According to series creator and writer Jed Mercurio, "Georgia is new to anti-corruption work and experiences ethical conflicts in investigating fellow officers. She also has impulse-control issues that lead to some uncomfortable situations in her professional relationships."

While you might think Raine would be worried about venturing away from period drama and into the hard-hitting modern day, she told us that all she was really worried about was running like a girl...

Line of Duty starts tonight at 9:00pm on BBC2

Call the Midwife

Raine plays prim and proper Jenny Lee, the midwife who introduced us to the poverty stricken streets of the East End. The series kicked off with Jenny's arrival at Nonnatus House and each episode is opened and closed by the soothing statements of her older self.

Now into its third highly successful series, Call the Midwife has seen Raine's character deal with abortion, neglect, poverty and matters of the heart. The most recent episode saw Jenny's boyfriend killed in a shocking accident and the midwife leave the East End for the Motherhouse in Chichester. When she'll return to Nonnatus House remains to be seen...

Call the Midwife continues on Sundays at 8:00pm on BBC1.

Doctor Who

From 1950's London to the 1970's... in the middle of nowhere with a ghost, a Time Lord and a Tardis.

Last year Jessica Raine starred in Doctor Who episode Hide alongside Matt Smith, Jenna Coleman and Dougray Scott. The episode saw her play Emma Grayling, a empath who was able to communicate with ghosts - and was also secretly in love with her employer Professor Alec Palmer.

An Adventure in Space and Time

Not straying far from Doctor Who, and sticking with the period dramas, Raine also appeared in the BBC2 drama An Adventure in Space and Time, which told the story of how Doctor Who was first created in the 1960s.

Raine played legendary BBC producer Verity Lambert, who worked on the original episodes of the sci-fi sensation with the first Doctor William Hartnell.

Garrow's Law

Back in 2009, Jessica Raine made her TV debut in... yet another period drama. She played Anne Porter in BBC1's 18th-century legal drama Garrow's Law, a London socialite and victim of the infamous London Monster, a man responsible for the random stabbing of several young ladies.

Line of Duty is on tonight at 9:00pm on BBC2.
