Life imitated (Ricky Gervais's) art once again this week, when a reporter mistook Samuel L Jackson for fellow actor Laurence Fishburne – and quickly found himself on the receiving end of a well-deserved tirade.
Los Angeles news presenter Sam Rubin was interviewing Jackson about his upcoming movie, the remake of RoboCop. Instead of sticking to questions about the film, Rubin decided to ask Jackson about his appearance in a recent Matrix-themed Super Bowl commercial. The only problem? Jackson was never in that commercial, Matrix actor Laurence Fishburne was...
After a few seconds of confusion, Jackson went off on the presenter. "You're as crazy as the people on Twitter!" the Avengers actor said while wagging a finger in disapproval. "I'm not Laurence Fishburne!"
After many attempts at apologising, Rubin tried to change the subject back to RoboCop. But Jackson was not about to let him get off that easy.
“You’re the entertainment reporter for this station? And you don’t know the difference between me and Laurence Fishburne?” he continued. “That must be a very short line for your job outside there.”
Ironically, it looks like Ricky Gervais predicted this unfortunate confusion nearly nine years earlier in an episode of Extras in which Jackson plays himself as Ashley Jensen mistakes him for Fishburne.
Gervais even took to Twitter to point out the show's successful prediction, which comes after it also correctly forecast Kate Winslet's Oscar win and the participation of Lionel Blair in Celebrity Big Brother.
News presenter Rubin has since publicly apologised for his unforgivable mistake, and seems to be taking it in his stride.
Whether Samuel L Jackson will ever quite see the funny side remains to be seen...
