Cambridge is without a doubt one of the most beautiful and charming cities in Britain – so how could a hotel be better positioned than by the banks of the River Cam, just yards from some of the most famous colleges in the city.
Although not as ancient as many of the buildings in the centre of Cambridge, within the hotel you will be greeted with a warm welcome and a fantastically luxurious property where care and attention to detail is order of the day.
I stayed in a room with a balcony overlooking the river, which is one of many rooms on the front of the building that offer an idyllic Cambridge scene for you to lap up without ever needing to leave your sleeping quarters.
The room was large and spacious; ample room for a travel cot, one of the biggest and most comfortable beds I’ve ever slept in, a desk, two armchairs, bedside cabinets and storage for a baby buggy, suitcases and bags. In addition there was a large bathroom attached to the room with equally modern and comfortable fittings.
The more adventurous visitor might like to hire a punt from the boatyard next door and explore the city by water – or perhaps just take advantage of the hotel’s central location to visit the city’s many attractions on foot.
The hotel has a small swimming pool, spa and gym available to all guests as well as ample parking for those staying overnight, although extra charges may be incurred.
The staff are friendly and really helpful – particularly with matters pertaining to my family and 6-month old baby, who was well-looked after every step of the way.
Whatever your reason for visiting this grand old university city, this hotel has got to be the best choices for a peaceful, luxurious and relaxing stay on the banks of the River Cam.
Eating and drinking
The Riverside Brasserie offers a fine dining experience on the banks of the Cam in a relaxed and unpretentious environment.
Those staying with dinner included can choose from an extensive choice of options on the three course set menu (a particular thumbs up for the halloumi and pesto salad) as part of their package, or spend up to £23 from the a la carte menu which has a great selection of meats and fish.
The food, staff and wine list are all exceptional – making this a great restaurant to kick back and relax in after a long day exploring the city, or attending meetings in the hotels extensive conference suites.
After dinner why not try the beautifully decorated and wonderfully relaxed Twist Bar on the ground floor (also next to the river) where you can have a cocktail, a beer or a nightcap before retiring to your room.
