Prepare for emotional scenes in the episode of Coronation Street set to air on Friday 31 January as the mourners gather to bid farewell to Hayley Cropper.
As can be seen in the excerpt below, Sean (Antony Cotton) has extra tissues for Julie (Katy Cavanagh), while Norris (Malcolm Hebden) decides to don the bright bow tie that he wore while ballroom dancing with Hayley. Meanwhile, Mary (Patti Clare) has opted for a Spanish flamenco dress.
As the hearse comes round the corner with the cardboard coffin on board, Carla (Alison King) looks out of the upstairs café window and tells Fiz (Jennie McAlpine) and Roy (David Neilson) that it’s time to go. But will Roy be able to keep his feelings about his wife’s death to himself?
“Roy’s emotions are really complex. The whole funeral is about Roy pretending that Hayley was all these nice things, when inside Roy is angry,” says Jennie McAlpine, who plays Fiz. “He’s a very honest and straightforward man and he doesn’t think it’s just or fair to let everyone grieve for Hayley and not tell them about what she’s done. Fiz, Anna and Carla all stay by Roy’s side because they are terrified he’s going to say something. She thinks he would regret it if he did.”
