You know that guy who survived the dramatic plunge from the roof of St Bart’s Hospital two years ago? No, not Sherlock, not even Benedict Cumberbatch – we’re talking about Will Willoughby…
Complete with Cumberbatch wig and that coat, Willoughby hurled himself from a platform time and again during filming of the solution to the series two cliffhanger.
Not that Cumberbatch was exactly sitting on the sidelines. The star performed many of the stunts himself, being dropped on wires suspended from a crane for the bungee jump red herring version of the fall, and following Willoughby in leaping from that platform too.
“Being his double, we have to see how it’s going to be for him as well as me,” says Willoughby in a special behind-the-scenes feature. “We want it to be as comfortable for Ben as possible.”
Sherlock fans can see both Cumberbatch and Willoughby in action in the film, which forms part of the DVD extras on the forthcoming Sherlock: Complete Series 3 release and reveals how the various solutions were shot.
There are also interviews with Sherlock co-creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat as well as stars including Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Amanda Abbington and Lars Mikkelsen.
