November was The Month of the Doctor. As the 50th anniversary of the world’s longest-running sci-fi series approached, we had a mini prequel episode featuring an incarnation of the Time Lord not seen on screen since 1996, followed by An Adventure in Space and Time, Mark Gatiss’s very well-received love letter to the show, which charted the birth of Doctor Who back in 1963 and featured a cameo that brought it right up to date.

Meanwhile, RadioTimes.com users voted the returning David Tennant their favourite ever Doctor and Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler the best-loved companion. And just days before the main event, Radio Times’s Vote Dalek! Cover was named Magazine Cover of the Century.

The Day of the Doctor itself had the internet in meltdown, with 12th Doctor Peter Capaldi making a surprise, if brief, appearance – along with fourth Doctor Tom Baker – as Matt Smith’s incarnation found a way to save his doomed home planet of Gallifrey.

And as one Time Lord prepared to hand over to another, there were tearful goodbyes to be said elsewhere in the entertainment world. November saw the death of Simpsons star Marcia Wallace, marked by a chalkboard message from her on-screen pupil Bart, while we also said goodbye to British tough-guy actor Lewis Collins, aka Bodie from 70s crime drama The Professionals.

Fictional endings included the murder of EastEnder Michael Moon – aka the departing Steve John Shepherd – the finale of another series of Downton Abbey and a farewell to Agatha Christie’s Poirot, as David Suchet donned the waxed moustache for the final time, completing the Belgian detective's canon after almost a quarter of a century in the job.

But just as those well-loved characters left us, there was news that others were returning. The remaining members of Monty Python announced their reunion for a series of stage shows, popular support was set to fund a comeback for plasticine character Morph, and Sherlock fans looked ahead to the detective's resurrection with the first official picture and synopsis for series three, before an Empty Hearse took to the streets of London to announce the all-important air date.

There were new beginnings, too, for Coronation Street – which unveiled its expanded Trafford-based set – and I’m a Celeb, which revealed the latest batch of stars heading for the Australian jungle. And we got a first look at the couple at the heart of the hot-hot-hotly-anticipated movie version of EL James's saucy novel Fifty Shades of Grey.

Of course, it wasn't just November, it was also Movember. RadioTimes.com celebrated with a gallery of some of the most inspirational moustaches from TV and film, while the body art continued as Twitter got excited by the news that veteran BBC broadcaster David Dimbleby had got himself a tattoo, at the ripe old age of 75.

And finally... November was the month that the Oxford Dictionary announced "selfie" as the word of 2013. To mark the occasion, we picked out 15 of our favourite self-taken celebrity snaps...
