The RadioTimes.com office may be the only ones wondering about this, but we ended up split 50/50 as to whether the name of Tolkien's dragon in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was pronounced 'Smorg' or 'Smowg'. The word 'or' in this instance being said 'or' (naturally) and 'ow' like I hurt myself 'ow'. Clear as mud, yes?

So, since we're no use, who better to ask about the correct pronunciation than the stars of the fantasy sequel, including the dragon himself...

Here's Martin Freeman, who plays eponymous Hobbit Bilbo Baggins, showing us how he thinks it should be said...

In fact, here's Bilbo Baggins saying it...

In fact, here's the voice of Smaug himself, Benedict Cumberbatch, saying it...

Director Peter Jackson kind of goes his own way, adding a bit of 'sh' sound.

And here's an entirely different way that we bargain probably won't crop up in the film...

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is in cinemas from Friday 13 December 2013
