Lifelong Corrie fan Cilla Black has fulfilled a dream by filming in the Rovers Return with Street stalwarts Rita Tanner (Barbara Knox) and Norris Cole (Malcolm Hebden).
The 70-year-old veteran performer will appear in the Weatherfield boozer in a sketch set to air tonight as part of The One and Only Cilla Black, a celebration of her 50 years in showbusiness.
“I play myself and I walk in the pub and no one realises it’s me,” Cilla said of the scene that features busybody Norris confusing the singer for ‘Daphne Ramsbottom of Balaclava Terrace’.
The former Blind Date host has previously admitted that she has turned down roles on the soap: “They have asked me to join the show. I love Corrie, but I keep saying no.
“I couldn't cope with all the hours they do; they work them like dogs. It's really hard work. It would be nice to do a cameo, but even Ian McKellen worked long hours when he did it for a while.”
Her one-off guest spot airs as part of a high-profile night for ITV soaps that sees an hour-long Ememrdale at 7pm followed by an extended Corrie at 8pm and the Paul O’Grady-hosted Cilla spectactular at 9pm.
