We haven’t seen Josh Hartnett (Black Hawk Down, Pearl Harbor) for a few years now – since 2011 in fact – but he will make a comeback in new eight-episode Showtime series Penny Dreadful, set in Victorian London. This time, the actor has dropped the glamour of Hollywood for the fields of Dublin.
Hartnett commented on the pressures of Hollywood: "I know what it's like to be in that whole world. I was up there for a couple of years, and it was uncomfortable. I think trying to stay at the top is a shortcut to unhappiness."
This month the star was joined by Irish actor Owen Roe (Ice Cream Girls, Intermission) on a travelling carnival set. Thirty-five-year-old Hartnett donned a woman’s red wig and a red flannel shirt for his character Ethan Edwards, the only American in the show.
Penny Dreadful will include characters from Gothic horror literature – from Frankenstein and Dracula to Dorian Gray.
The series is the brainchild of Oscar nominee John Logan, who wrote the latest James Bond outing Skyfall, and is executive produced by the film's director Sam Mendes. An impressive series cast includes other Bond alumni Casino Royale star Eva Green and former 007 Timothy Dalton.
Shooting will take place in Ireland until March. Penny Dreadful is due for release in Spring 2014.
