ITV’s new period drama, set in a London hospital during the 1960s, looks set to fulfil all our period drama needs, with happy housewives, dramatic encounters, mysterious expressions, suspicious behavior, passion, pain… and of course perfect period dresses.
Set in a busy Gynaecology unit in 1961, Breathless follows a group of doctors and nurses as they navigate the changing social codes of life on the brink of the Sixties revolution. Their workplace might appear ordered and controlled, but underneath is a complex web of mystery, lies and simmering passion. Sounds exciting, doesn’t it?
It really is like Downton Abbey meets Call the Midwife – and not just because it’s a glossy period drama with a medical setting. Two of the show’s stars have graced the Abbey before. Zoe Boyle played doomed Lavinia, Matthew Crawley’s sickly fiance, in the second series of Downton Abbey, while Ian Glen played Mary’s one-time fiance, newspaper mogul Sir Richard Carlisle.
Breathless starts on Thursday 10 October at 9:00pm on ITV
