And how is Debbie feeling now that she knows the man she loves is responsible not just for the death of Carl but other villagers as well? “She is totally heartbroken. The person she is in love with is not what she thought he was. It’s very sad.
“Plus she feels very much like she’s putting herself in danger over this. But she has to do it as she feels utterly betrayed and knows he has to be caught for what he’s done.”
The trouble is that until Cameron incriminates himself, Debbie must attempt to remain casual and act as if nothing is wrong. All of which proves to be particularly difficult where the bedroom is concerned:
“She knows she has to keep him close even though she actually wants him nowhere near her. But she has to keep playing it for real and must continue sleeping with him despite feeling sick about the whole thing.”
However, as the fraught week progresses, Debbie encounters unexpected difficulties. First Cain (Jeff Hordley) incriminates himself by referencing the fact that he recently tried to kidnap Cameron. And then Cam mentions Carl’s murder to Debbie in the Woolpack, a location that is out of view and earshot of the police.
With Debbie fretting, it isn’t long before Cain is picking up on her odd behaviour and, pretty soon, she’s unburdening herself to her dad. “She initially tries to hide it but Cain knows her so well and wants to know what’s going on. So it all comes tumbling out. Her next move is to then go to the police and ask if she can wear a wire so she doesn’t miss another confession from Cameron.”
But events come to a head when Debbie does eventually get Cameron to own up during a tense double bill to be screened on Thursday 19 September. After uttering a pre-arranged code word and shouting for the police to come and get Cameron, Debbie reveals that she has been wearing a wire.
Quick as a flash, Cameron bolts the door and wedges furniture against it. Suddenly, the surveillance operation has turned into a hostage situation with Cameron calling the shots – if the police come one step closer, he will kill Debbie! “She’s seriously worried when Cameron turns on her,” says Webb. “He’s a killer who knows he’s trapped.”
So with nothing else to lose, will Cameron go to desperate lengths to evade capture? And will this mean the end of Debbie? Find out when the stand-off airs next week.
