Dawson’s Creek star Michelle Williams will take to the stage in the hit Liza Minnelli musical Cabaret, on Broadway next year.
Williams will take over the character of Sally Bowles from Emma Stone (The Help, Spiderman, Zombieland), who was previously cast in the role but is unable to continue due to her hectic schedule. Williams will play alongside Alan Cumming as the character of Emcee.
It’s not the first time the Golden Globe-winning actress Williams has been on stage; she appeared in an Off Broadway production of Mike Leigh play Smelling a Rat 11 years ago at the Samuel Beckett Theatre.
The upcoming Cabaret production, from Roundabout Theatre Company show at the Studio 54 theatre on Broadway, will be directed by Sam Mendes and choreographed by Rob Marshall.
The critically acclaimed musical is currently touring the UK with Pop Idol winner Will Young, who plays Emcee. Based on the 1972 film, the plot is set in 1931 Berlin during the Nazi era and follows a performer at the bohemian Kit Kat Klub who aims to be a “great film star," if booze and sex doesn't get her first. Meanwhile, the violent Nazi’s rise to power, is ever present in the background.
