Bret Easton Ellis, screenwriter and pal of Fifty Shades of Grey author EL James, says Twilight star Robert Pattinson was first choice for the part of S&M addict Christian Grey in the upcoming movie adaptation of the steamy novel.
Following the announcement yesterday that Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam had scooped the coveted role, alongside newcomer Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele, Ellis took to Twitter to relate a conversation he and James had had while partying at Robert Pattinson’s house, revealing “her first choice for Christian was Rob Pattinson”.
Pattinson has long been linked with the role due to the fact that Fifty Shades started out life as a piece of Twilight fan fiction. But Ellis, who had at one point hoped to write the screenplay for the Fifty Shades film, dismissed some of the other actors whose involvement had been rumoured, saying “Ian Somerhalder never in running... “and Matt Bomer was never in the running”.
Indeed, the screenwriter had his own ideas as to who should be cast, saying he wanted porn star James Deen (the star he cast for The Canyons) to take on the role.
EL James herself seemed pretty pleased with the eventual casting news, taking to Twitter to announce, “The gorgeous and talented Charlie Hunnam will be Christian Grey in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.”
However, there is an online petition in which fans are calling for the aforementioned Matt Bomer (star of US TV show White Collar) to be cast as Christian and Gilmore Girls actress Alexis Bledel for Anastasia.
More than 7,600 entries doesn’t look like it’ll have much impact however, with producer Dana Brunetti confirming:
“There is a lot that goes into casting that isn’t just looks. Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor, etc.
“So if your favourite wasn’t cast, then it is most likely due to something on that list. Keep that in mind while hating and keep perspective.”
