The famously buff Matthew McConaughey was looking alarmingly gaunt earlier this year, but don't worry, it was all in the name of art. His role in new flick Dallas Buyers Club required him to shed 50 pounds of weight for his portrayal of Texas electrician Ron Woodroof, who was given 30 days to live after being diagnosed with HIV in 1986.
Inspired by real-life events, the film follows Woodroof's battle with officials after he begins smuggling alternative drugs into America to help himself and fellow sufferers. McConaughey is joined by 30 Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto who also dropped a considerable amount of weight to play Rayon, a transexual woman with HIV.
Jennifer Garner co-stars as a doctor who helps and supports Woodroof, who went on to survive for six years during which he persistently clashed with authorities determined to prevent his controversial medicines from reaching the States.
Both McConaughey and Leto's physical transformations for their roles have already generated a predictable amount of Oscars buzz, with reviewers getting the chance to have their say when the film premieres at next month's Toronto International Film Festival. UK cinema-goers will have to wait a little longer as Dallas Buyers Club isn't set to open until 7 February 2014. In the meantime, check out the first full-length trailer below...
