Dame Helen Mirren was one of the first names linked to the role of the Doctor after Matt Smith announced his plans to leave.
Mirren would be the first female to play the lead, but Mirren’s got other ideas.
“I’m not going to be the first female Doctor Who, no, no, no, absolutely not, I absolutely wouldn’t contemplate that… but I do think it’s well over-time to have a female Doctor Who… I think a gay, black female Doctor Who would be best of all,” Mirren told Daybreak.
Mirren has already said she can think of “10 wonderful British actresses who would absolutely kill in that role”, but doesn’t appear to count herself among those.
Probably for the best given fans will be quick to point out they’re looking for a new Doctor, not a new Doctor Who…
Mirren’s not the only big-name female actress to be linked the role, with comedy gem Miranda Hart’s name also thrown into the pot.
Luther’s Idris Elba, Homeland’s David Harewood and even Russell Brand have been talked about, as speculation around the next Time Lord mounts.
Smith’s replacement is thought to be planned for an August or September unveiling.
