More than 40 canines let rip on California’s waves last weekend during the annual 2013 Loews Surf Dog Competition

A crowd of 3,000 people gathered on San Diego’s Imperial Beach last weekend - to watch 40 dogs riding waves in the 7th annual Loews Surf Dog Competition.

This year, the dogs in the competition made history as they smashed three world records. One for the most amount of dogs on a surfboard at one time, one record for the most amount of dogs surfing on one board at one time with a human (Scott Chandler), and another record for the most amount of dogs surfing on one board at one time with two humans (Scott and Tyler Chandler).

The "grommutts" surfed in three heats: small dogs, large dogs and tandem.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the ASPCA, a charity fighting for the prevention of cruelty to animals.

If you’d like to sign your dog up for the next doggy surfing comp, head to Dog Beach in Del Mar. The Helen Woodward Animal Center will be offering doggy surf lessons in advance of the next fun furry beach event – the Surf DogSurf-A-Thon, which takes place on September 8 2013.
