A US captioner was caught in a spot of bother last week whilst working on coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing after a segment on Fox news affiliate KDFW wrongly identified the attack’s prime suspect as a high-profile American television star.

A screen grab of the channel’s broadcasting on last week’s tragic events reveals their accidental identification of New Girl actress Zooey Deschanel alongside a picture of now-charged teenager Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

The on-screen caption read: “Marathon Bomber. He is 19-year-old Zooey Deschanel.” The 33-year-old TV star eventually noticed the blunder, later tweeting to her 4.2 million followers:

Kala J. Patterson – president of the offending company, Caption Solutions – has issued an apology for the mishap, saying the firm “deeply regret” the mistake and “sincerely apologise for the error” they made.
