EastEnders: Barbara Windsor – I’m tempted to return as Peggy Mitchell

The actress reveals that she has been asked to make a comeback on the BBC1 soap

EastEnders legend Barbara Windsor has admitted that she is tempted to make a return to the BBC1 soap.

The 75-year-old actress, who played landlady Peggy Mitchell, said today: “I miss EastEnders. I absolutely do. I loved it. But I was exhausted when I left, absolutely exhausted. But they asked me to go back recently. They’ve asked me a couple of times, but I think about it and I don’t sleep.”

Speaking on ITV’s This Morning, Windsor added: “I am tempted, that’s the point! But Scott [husband Scott Mitchell] says you have to really think about it because towards the end I was so exhausted and not sleeping at night and waking up looking at the script – it became too much part of my life. If you’re like me, I take every single job like it’s my last time…which it might be! And if I’m called in a 6.30, I’m in at 6. It my own fault. When they asked me to go back I got all very excited – but I’m not quite ready for it.”

Windsor played the role between 1994 and 2010, with Peggy last seen walking out of Walford having recently witnessed the burning of her beloved Queen Vic pub.

Yet despite not being on the soap for over two years, it seems that the actress has not lost contact with her former cast mates: “Fortunately I still see Steve [McFadden], June who plays Dot, and Pam St Clement, so I do see them and I’ve been down to a couple of parties. But I’m not going to go anymore because I always get that feeling when I come back…”
