Sense8, a ten-part series created by Andy and Lana Wachowski (The Matrix, pictured above) and JM Straczynski (Babylon 5), is described as “a gripping global tale of minds linked and souls hunted.”
The idea for the show came out of a conversation between the Wachowskis, who told Deadline: “Several years ago, we had a late-night conversation about the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us, and out of that paradox Sense8 was born.”
They added: “We’re excited to work with Netflix on this project, and we’ve wanted to work with Joe Straczynski for years, chiefly due to the fact his name is harder to pronounce than ours, but also because we share a love of genre and all things nerdy.”
Sense8 is the latest original commission announced by Netflix, whose acquisitions of the US remake of House of Cards and fourth series of Arrested Development made headlines earlier this year.
“Andy and Lana Wachowski and Joe Straczynski are among the most imaginative writers and gifted visual storytellers of our time,” said Netflix’s chief executive Ted Sarandos. “Their incredible creations are favourites of Netflix members globally and we can’t wait to bring Sense8 to life.”
