Taxi to the Dark Side director Alex Gibney details the rise and fall of WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange in his new film We Steal Secrets: the Story of WikiLeaks, and you can see a trailer for the upcoming big-screen documentary below.
Due out in May, the film offers a unique and unsettling appraisal of how the whistleblowing website and its Australian editor changed the world.
We Steal Secrets premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and reviewers at the time noted how, for much of the film, Assange comes across as a driven - if eccentric – activist whose campaign for total transparency not only opened the eyes of ordinary Americans to atrocities being committed in their name, but also helped spark off the Arab Spring.
But as We Steal Secrets plays out, Assange’s dark side begins to alienate his supporters and his world falls apart after sexual assault charges are levelled against him in Sweden.
Described by its director as a film in which "the black hats and the white hats get enveloped in a sea of grey," We Steal Secrets is scheduled for release in Britain on Friday 24 May.
