Firefighter Toni Griffiths (Tara Moran) has become the first victim of the fire at the Rovers Return.

In tonight’s episode, Toni – the colleague of Corrie regular Paul Kershaw (Tony Hirst) – was seen climbing up a ladder into the top window of the pub in order to rescue Karl Munro (John Michie). But as the arsonist was carried to safety out of the Rovers, part of the interior collapsed swallowing up Toni in the process.

It was only a matter of time before workmate Paul was given the bad news – “She’s dead. Toni – she’s dead,” he told a stunned gathering of his concerned neighbours after fellow fire officers made a search of the establishment. Later, Paul expressed regret to both Eileen (Sue Cleaver) and Sean (Antony Cotton) that he didn’t prevent her from entering the building: “Why the hell didn’t I stop her?” he agonised.

Earlier in the episode, both landlady Stella Price (Michelle Collins) and Sunita Alahan (Shobna Gulati) were brought out alive but badly injured from the blazing pub.

ITV recently announced the inferno will eventually claim two lives and that this storyline heralds the end of actress Shobna Gulati’s time on the soap. Coronation Street continues on Sunday at 7.00pm.
