Oscar-winning actress Kathy Bates is the first new cast member to be announced for the third series of Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story.
Bates, whose horror pedigree includes a starring role in Stephen King movie adaptation Misery, will play the best friend-turned-enemy of series regular Jessica Lange, according to US insiders TV Line and Deadline.
The new season is rumoured to be set in the modern day with a Romeo and Juliet-esque storyline. Murphy has also been quoted as saying that it will be a “bit more evil glamour” than the previous gothic-tinged tales.
The first series of American Horror Story followed a family who unwittingly moved into a ‘murder house’ haunted by the home’s former inhabitants, while the second focussed on the inmates and staff of the Briarcliff Mental Institution.
Many of the same actors appear in each season, but as different characters. Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Taissa Farmiga, Frances Conroy, and Lily Rabe are also set to return for the horror anthology’s third cycle.
