Søren Sveistrup, creator of The Killing, is working on a new bilingual crime thriller for Cinemax, the sister channel of US network HBO.
Piv Bernth, head of drama at Danish public broadcaster DR, told Broadcast: “We are trying to develop something with them for the US. Cinemax wants something bilingual. They like the tough, hard stuff, the action dramas and we have Søren Sveistrup working on something.”
HBO has long been interested in creating a series similar to the gritty crime dramas, such as The Killing and The Bridge, currently emanating from Scandinavia.
The US cable network began approaching various Scandinavian TV producers last year with a view to putting some bespoke series for its HBO Nordic streaming service into production, and Sweden’s national radio broadcaster Sveriges Radio reported in January that Sveistrup had been asked to write a series for HBO along similar lines to The Killing.
Cinemax has co-produced a number of projects with international broadcasters in recent years, such as Strike Back, which was made with Sky, and Hunted, with the BBC.
Sveistrup, who wrote all three series of The Killing, joined the drama’s cast on stage at the 2011 Baftas to accept the Academy’s Best International award.
