Neighbours fans across the UK are being urged to take part in a competition that could result in their vocals being used on a remixed version of the Aussie soap’s theme song.
Channel 5 is asking viewers to submit recordings of themselves singing the Neighbours theme. The broadcaster will send one British vocalist Down Under later this year to represent the UK in an Ashes-style singing contest against an Australian contender.
The winner of this battle-of-the-nations showdown will then be offered the chance to sing a new version of the Neighbours theme, which will replace the soap's current opening credits song in April.
Five UK finalists will be selected after the competition closes at midday on Friday 1 March, and their versions of the Neighbours theme will be aired over the soap’s opening credits during the week beginning Monday 18 March. A public vote will then decide which British finalist will make the journey to Oz in April.
Details of how to enter the contest can be found on Channel 5’s Neighbours Remixed website alongside the theme’s lyrics and backing track. Contestants have to be aged 18 or over and able to travel to Australia between 1 and 10 April.
Talking about the competition, C5’s commissioning editor for entertainment, daytime and soaps Greg Barnett said: “We’ve beaten the Aussies in the last two cricket meetings, so I’m confident a UK soloist can be crowned the voice of the new Neighbours theme.
“We’re using Soundcloud as our mode of entry so it’s super-accessible and the prize is absolutely fantastic. The UK has an amazing pool of talent. I’m truly confident this is a prize we can win.”
If the contest sounds like something you’d like to take part in, you can gauge the level of competition by listening to other entrants’ renditions of the theme here.
And here’s Neighbours star Ryan Moloney, aka Toadfish, with some more tips for budding entrants. Good luck!
Neighbours airs every weekday on Channel 5 at 1:45pm and 5:30pm.
