Merlin creators to explore Atlantis for BBC1 on Saturday nights

Misfits writer Howard Overman to pen 13-part series about sunken city of Greek legend

The writers and creators behind BBC1’s popular family drama Merlin are to create a new Saturday-night saga set on the legendary island city of Atlantis.

Misfits creator Howard Overman, who also wrote episodes of Merlin, is the writer and creator of the new show, called simply Atlantis, which will run for thirteen 45-minute episodes this autumn. Merlin creators Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy are the series’ executive producers.

Set on the island city – in stories by the ancient Greeks, a naval power that built an empire before itself sinking into the ocean – the series will draw on the creatures, deities and heroes of Greek legend, “re-imagined for a new generation”.

Shooting begins in Wales and Morocco in April.

Merlin’s last ever episode was broadcast on 24 December 2012.
