Dominic West and Helena Bonham Carter are to play Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in a one-off 90-minute BBC4 drama.

Burton and Taylor will explore one of the most famous and volatile celebrity marriages of the 20th Century, focussing on the movie stars' ill-fated appearance in a 1983 stage production of Noel Coward's Private Lives.

Two of the most famous film stars in the world during the 1960s and 70s, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor were married thirteen times between them, and married each other twice.  Firstly they were wed for a decade between 1964 and 1974, and then tied the knot again between 1975 and 1976.

West, who rose to fame in US hit crime drama The Wire was last seen on the BBC in the second series of 1950s newsroom drama, The Hour.  Bonham Carter's 2012 credits include film versions of Les Miserables and Great Expectations.

The drama will be directed by Richard Laxton (Effie, Him And Her, Hancock) and the produced by Silent Witness's Lachlan McKinnon.

No air date has been confirmed.
