The enigmatic and often controversial artist’s engagement with portraiture has never been explored in exhibition form before, despite it constituting around half of his artistic output.
More than 50 works, including portraits of his wife, Antonin Proust and Émile Zola, illustrate his forward-thinking, modern approach to portraiture. Manet painted everyday people and luminaries of the era, giving life to both his subjects and contemporary Parisian society.
