Peter Parker will be battling new villains and reuniting with old friends in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, according to the film’s official synopsis.

Production on the Marvel superhero sequel began earlier this week in New York, and Columbia Pictures has now released a précis of the film’s plot.

The studio has also confirmed that actors Paul Giamatti and Sally Field, who were rumoured to be in negotiations with The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s makers in January, have joined the film’s cast in unspecified roles.

Here’s Columbia’s plot synopsis:

“In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough.

“Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep.

“Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.“

Director Marc Webb revealed earlier this week that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be shot entirely on film.

The sequel, which has been written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Jeff Pinkner, is scheduled for release on 18 April 2014
