Not since his accession to the throne in 1483 has Richard III been such big news. So, with the bones found in a Leicester car park now confirmed by archaelogists as those of the controversial former king of England, BBC1 has picked the perfect moment to reveal the first photos of the actor who will play Richard in upcoming historical drama The White Queen.
Aneurin Barnard, last seen as a young David Bailey alongside Karen Gillan in BBC4 Swinging Sixties drama We’ll Take Manhattan, will star as Richard Duke of Gloucester, younger brother of King Edward IV, in the ten-part series.
Set during the War of the Roses and focusing on the women behind the most powerful men in the country, the adaptation of Philippa Gregory’s novel also stars Max Irons, James Frain, Rebecca Ferguson, Janet McTeer, Amanda Hale and Faye Marsay.
The question is, does Barnard look like Richard? Judging by the famous painting of the King by an unknown artist (currently on display in the National Potrait Gallery) we’d say there is indeed something of a resemblance…
