The battle for David Metcalfe’s (Matthew Wolfenden) affections will intensify next week after Priya (Fiona Wade) mistakenly takes some words of comfort as a proposal.
It all comes about after Priya turns down a job offer at Home Farm so that Alicia (Natalie Anderson) can take the post:
“When Priya gets the job, she realises just how easy it is for her to get things,” says actress Fiona Wade, who plays Priya. “She’s never had to struggle for much and whatever she’s wanted she’s got. So she feels slightly guilty because she realises she does have it all compared to Alicia, who’s really struggling. And she does feel guilty about David too.”
However, Priya’s good deed soon turns out to have unexpected consequences after she tells David about what she has done:
“He’s quite surprised and happy at what Priya’s done. But then that backfires because she can see he’s more happy that she’s turned it down than he would have been had she taken it. So that ruffles a few feathers. But then Priya is struck when he says that if he could be married to her instead, he would be. She then tests him and says, ‘really? Is that what you meant?’ And he says, ‘yes’. So that’s when it gets completely out of hand.
“The thing with David is that he always mixes his words. And also, he’d rather not do confrontation – he doesn’t want to hurt either Alicia or Priya. I think, though, that it would be nice for Priya and David to get married. But there’s always a twist with these things.”
Last year, Emmerdale fans saw David enter into a sham marriage with Alicia so that he could have custody of young Jacob while she served out a prison sentence. However, when David subsequently fell for Priya, his new relationship was soon complicated by the return of Alicia to the village.
Viewers can see David’s inadvertent declaration in the episode set to air on Friday 25 January at 7pm on ITV.
