It’s a case of new year, new persona for Debbie Dingle as she begins 2013 with a fresh agenda: in the wake of Cameron’s (Dominic Power) betrayal, she’s determined that her children will no longer want for anything and goes all out to earn some serious cash:
“She becomes very business minded and has this complete change overnight,” explains actress Charley Webb, who plays Debbie. “She changes her look, her hair, her appearance – and it’s all about making money for the kids. Nobody’s ever going to screw her over again.”
Her plan involves setting up a courier business and she sets out to use rider Dom (Wil Johnson) to gain all the relevant information she needs. But it isn’t long before she learns that the company that Dom works for is involved in illegal activities: namely, the delivery of drugs. So does this revelation make her think twice about establishing her own enterprise?
“Well, as soon as she hears that the courier business is dodgy, it makes her more interested! She thinks, ‘bloody hell! If it’s dodgy, there’s got to be some serious money to be made’. And she’s not scared of getting into dodgy stuff. For years, she’s watched her mum and dad do what they want and get what they want. And now she thinks, ‘right. That’s it. I’m going to be like that’.
“Debbie has a one-track mind at the moment. She’s just thinking of becoming a mini Cain. Her heart is completely broken and the only way she can get through it is to put on this massive front and pretend that everything’s all right.”
Part of this front involves using whatever means necessary to charm Dom, even if it means taking him to bed! “She doesn’t flirt at first. It starts out as business. But once she realises that he might have something to offer her, she starts to bring in the flirting. Just completely using him. She’s got no interest in him whatsoever.”
And what does she hope to achieve by her actions? “She’s basically planning on stealing all the contacts of the company that Dom works for and screwing them over by planting drugs. So she sleeps with him so she can steal his keys. She knows they’re already involved in drugs, so she’s planning on them getting caught.”
But is Debbie out of her depth? And how will Cain (Jeff Hordley) and Charity (Emma Atkins) react when they realise what she’s up to? Find out in next week’s episodes of Emmerdale on ITV1.
