“Yeah, I’ll marry you,” said Sharon Rickman (Letitia Dean) at the climax of the New Year’s Day instalment of EastEnders. But only she, and not the viewer, could see whose proposal she was accepting.
Earlier, we’d seen both Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) and Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) state their intention to wed Sharon. But only in tonight’s episode was it revealed that Jack had been picked to be Sharon’s third husband.
Phil, for his part, was unusually sanguine when Sharon told him that she wanted “something new” in her life:
“No one’s gonna have what we have,” she said. “All that history. But it’s just that. It’s the past.”
Phil then replied that if she was happy, then so was he. But surely, we haven’t heard the last of the matter? Phil seemed pretty certain back on New Year’s Eve that, in a year’s time, Sharon would be his. And it’s not in his nature to give up so easily.
Maybe Jack should continue looking over his shoulder, even if he does manage to make Sharon his wife? After all, her previous marriages to Grant and Dennis descended, respectively, into acrimony and death. It obviously pays to play it safe when Sharon becomes your life partner.
EastEnders continues tomorrow at 8pm and 9pm on BBC1
