A dark and dramatic new trailer for Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters has been released, starring Jeremy Renner as Hansel, Gemma Arterton as Gretel and Famke Janssen as the leader of an evil witch coven.

Set 15 years after the pair were imprisoned in a witch's gingerbread house, this new take on the Brothers Grimm fairytale is definitely not one for children.

Now all grown up, Hansel and Gretel travel the world hunting and killing witches. And when they are recruited by the Mayor of Augsburg to save the town's missing children, they find themselves face to face with a powerful witches' coven...

Directed by Norwegian film maker Tommy Wirkola, the 3D film is part of a growing trend for dark retellings of classic children's fairytales.

Amanda Seyfried starred in a revamped version of Red Riding Hood in 2011 while Kristen Stewart recently took the leading role in an action adventure adaptation of Snow White's story in Snow White and the Huntsman

Later this year Nicholas Hoult is also starring alongside Ewan McGregor and Bill Nighy in Jack the Giant Slayer, a modern day retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters will be in UK cinemas from 22 February 2013
