EastEnders favourite Dot Branning (June Brown) will make her return in a BBC Red Button special on 11 January 2013.
In Dorothy Branning: the Next Chapter, viewers will see granddaughter Abi (Lorna Fitzgerald) leave the East End on a mission to seek out Dot following her prolonged absence. But why has she stayed away from Walford for so long? And why won’t she come home?
This project marks the first sighting of Dot since May this year. She was last seen leaving Albert Square in order to visit her granddaughter Dotty following the death of Heather Trott (Cheryl Fergison).
Actress Brown, 85, took a sabbatical from the soap in order to write her memoirs and front the BBC documentary Respect Your Elders, which was broadcast in August. Following the Red Button special, Brown will make a full return to EastEnders. Executive producer Lorraine Newman said of the comeback:
"Dot is one of EastEnders' best-loved characters and Albert Square hasn't been the same without her."
