After months of speculation, Walford villain Derek Branning (Jamie Foreman) has been unmasked as Kat Moon’s (Jessie Wallace) mystery man. In tonight’s episode of EastEnders, wronged husband Alfie (Shane Richie) secretly followed Kat and confronted her at the George Street bedsit where she’d been conducting her extra-marital fling.

In a room decked out with rose petals and candles, Kat fought to answer Alfie’s questions as he accused her of continual lies. “You are here waiting for him,” he seethed, before being told by Kat that she’d been the victim of harassment since finishing the relationship.

Following Kat’s refusal to offer up a name, Alfie started to piece together the evidence and then made a grab for the tenancy contract that was on the bedside table of the "seedy little shag pad". In a desperate attempt to keep the truth concealed, Kat set the document alight. But as the flames engulfed the paper, Alfie saw the agreement was addressed to a ‘Mr Branning’.

Alfie then realised that he'd been kept deliberately out of the way so that Kat could conduct her affair, even being sent to Germany to source supplies for the Christmas market. "Don't give up on me," pleaded Kat, to no avail. "I can't stand the sight of you, right now. You make me sick," replied Alfie.

Alfie then stormed round to the Vic to tackle Max, Jack and Derek Branning, and demanded to know which of them had been seeing Kat behind his back. After falling under the misapprehension that it was Max who was the guilty party thanks to an ill-timed call to his mobile phone, Kat was forced to admit the truth:

“It’s him. It’s Derek,” she said, pointing a shaky finger in the direction of her lover, who smugly lit up a cigar at the exact moment he was being accused. Cue the duff-duff drumbeats and an audience left hanging for the repercussions of this dramatic admission.

Viewers have been attempting to guess the identity of the amorous Albert Square resident since summer, with the field of five suspects having eventually narrowed to the three Branning brothers. Jamie Foreman, who plays Derek, is set to leave over Christmas after a stint on the soap lasting just over a year.

EastEnders continues tomorrow at 8pm.
