Hugh Laurie set to star in US pirate drama Crossbones

House star will shiver his timbers as Blackbeard in NBC’s new pirate drama, from the pen of Luther writer Neil Cross, according to US reports

Hugh Laurie is about to swap his scrubs for the high seas in a new NBC pirate drama Crossbones.

The British actor and comedian, best known in recent times for his lead role in Fox medical drama House, is set to play Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, reports Deadline.

Blackbeard is the head of a rogue nation of thieves, outlaws and pirates based on the Bahamian island of New Providence. Part shantytown, part marauder’s paradise, it’s a place dubbed the first democracy of the Americas; but the island is a growing threat to international commerce. As a result an assassin is despatched to dispose of its leader, however he quickly becomes enchanted by the island and his charismatic target.

Scripted by Luther creator Neil Cross, the 10-part series is a high concept adaptation of The Republic of Pirates, a novel by Colin Woodward which follows the golden age of piracy.

The role would mark Laurie’s first return to primetime television since his starring role on House, which ran from 2004 t0 2012 on Fox and landed him six Emmy nominations and two Golden Globe wins during the show’s eight season run.
