Last night's X Factor results show marked one of the most shocking sing-offs in the show's history. Public darling Ella Henderson faced fellow favourite James Arthur after the pair received the least amount of votes, despite winning over the judges week after week.
34-year-old warbler Christopher Maloney and ostentatious performer Rylan Clark - who have both faced regular criticism from the judging panel - lived to sing another week and were joined by Jahméne Douglas and last week's sing-off survivors, Union J.
The realisation that either Ella or James would be leaving the competition left fans in uproar and when the vote went to deadlock - and 16-year-old Ella was sent packing - Simon Cowell led the indignation expressed by many Twitter users:

Ella's fellow X Factor acts also rallied around her following the shock result, as Union J, Rylan Clark and Jahméne Douglas all tweeted support for their departing friend.
