Two members of the Cheers cast are to re-unite for a new comedy, RadioTimes.com can confirm.
Kirstie Alley and Rhea Perlman, who played feuding bar manager and waitress Rebecca and Carla in the iconic NBC sitcom, will join forces for Giant Baby, a pilot comedy project from Ugly Betty and Samantha Who writer Marco Pennette.
Giant Baby casts Alley as a Broadway star who finds her life turned upside down when the son she gave up for adoption turns up looking to reconnect with his mother. Perlman will play Alley’s long-suffering assistant in the pilot, which will air on TV Land, a US cable channel more familiar with re-running classic sitcoms than commissioning new ones.
“We’ve hit the jackpot getting Kirstie and Rhea back together,” said Keith Cox, TV Land’s executive vice president of development and original programming. “It’s a dream to work with such talented comedic actors like these ladies and create a show for them that’s funny and has interesting characters – Giant Baby hits all of those notes.”
Based around the regulars of a Boston bar, Cheers ran for 11 seasons from 1982-1993. At its height the sitcom was appointment viewing, attracting huge audiences including around 85 million who tuned in to the show’s final episode.
The Giant Baby pilot will be the third time that Alley and Perlman have worked alongside one another since their six-year stint together on Cheers. Their most recent collaboration, last year, was another sitcom pilot, The Manzinis, which failed to make the grade over at ABC.
