No, Channel 5, it’s not a dream…Dallas 2.0, as its producer jokingly calls the show, attracted a huge audience to C5 and HD last night, with over 2.7m viewers tuning in to find out how JR and the rest of the Ewing family are coping with life in the 21st century.
Season opener Changing of the Guard drew an average of 2.75m viewers and a 12.3% audience share between 9:00-10:15pm, and was far and away the best performing show on Richard Desmond’s terrestrial station yesterday evening.
Beginning with 2.72m viewers (11.8%), Dallas’ audience swelled to a peak of 2.9m (14.1%) during its last fifteen minutes on air, and a further 181,000 people (1.1%) caught the show an hour later on Channel 5+1.
Celebrity Big Brother, which has been C5’s top ratings earner over the past few weeks, was decidedly shunted into second place by the US family drama last night. 1.5m viewers (7.4%) tuned in to see the build up to yesterday’s CBB double eviction between 8:00-9:00pm, and 1.8m people (11.3%) stayed with 5 after Dallas to see Julie Goodyear and Prince Lorenzo Borghese booted out of the Big Brother house at 10:15pm.
Dallas also annihilated its dramatic competition over on BBC2, leaving the finale of Vexed’s second season languishing with just 787,000 viewers and a 3.4% audience share between 9:00-10:00pm, though ITV1’s Mrs Biggs outperformed C5’s Texan import with 3.5m viewers (16%) in the same timeslot.
Jeff Ford, Director of Programmes Channel 5 said: “This is an excellent result for the first episode of Dallas after so much anticipation and excitement around the show coming to Channel 5. I’m confident when we take into account people catching up with show after transmission we’ll break the four million mark”
Cynthia Cidre, Dallas’s executive producer, recently revealed that the new-look drama has already been re-commissioned in the States. On last night’s evidence, C5 would do well to snap up the rights to season two post-haste...
