He may have pushed his ship and her crew to their limits as Captain Jack Aubrey in 2003 film Master and Commander: Far Side of the World, but filmstar Russell Crowe may still need to brush up on his navigational skills after his boating antics this weekend.
The 48-year-old actor had to be rescued by the US coastguard after getting lost in a kayak off New York’s Long Island.
He and his friend, Chris Feather, had to beach their kayaks, and Crowe called out to shore to attract the attention of the coastguard.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Robert Swieiki apparently didn’t immediately recongise the Oscar-winning actor when he came to his rescue. He said the Australian filmstar had “just got a little lost”.
Crowe tweeted his thanks to the coastguard for “guiding the way” in the early hours of Sunday morning. Perhaps the star of Master and Commander will think twice before attempting to set out for adventure on the seas of the far side of the world (well, Cold Spring Harbour) before his next trip.
